Girato in bianco e nero ma in "cinemascope", il film si colloca - senza grandi
pretese - nel filone inaugurato da Il mondo perduto. Come in altri film degli anni '50, l'avventura è inframezzata (e
diluita) da 

spezzoni di documentari che mostrano l'efficienza delle forze armate americane, ma i trucchi che
servono a raccontare la "bocca dell'inferno" sono elementari e poco plausibili. Il paesaggio è visibilmente un 

fondale dipinto (gli sbuffi di vapore che circondano i piedi dei protagonisti servono in parte a correggere i
difetti della prospettiva); il serpente marino è chiaramente di cartapesta e il goffo tirannosauro 

(nonostante il primissimo piano del muso abbia un certo realismo) è un figurante travestito da mostro. Per
contrasto, le scene dei due lucertoloni che lottano stonano con tutto il resto, ma, in definitiva, la 

storia
è piacevole perché riscattata dalla presenza dell'inselvatichito dottor Hunter (l'attore Henry Brandon).




Nel corso di una
missione geografica promossa dalla marina americana per l'esplorazione dell'Antartide, l'elicottero X3 incappa in una
improvvisa bufera e, urtato da "qualcosa" (...solo gli spettatori vedono 

che si tratta di uno pterodattilo),
è costretto ad un atterraggio di fortuna in una regione sconosciuta. L'equipaggio - tre uomini e una giornalista - si
salva e scopre di essere precipitato in un mondo 

fantastico, probabilmente nell'interno di un cratere a 3000
piedi sotto il livello del mare, incredibilmente fermo ai tempi preistorici....................
